On this day, 57 years ago,

on May 14, 1968,

Sergeant First Class

Finnis D. McCleery,

a 40-year-old platoon leader

with Company A, 1st Battalion,

6th Infantry Regiment,

198th Infantry Brigade,

Americal Division, led his men

in an assault against

a well-fortified

North Vietnamese Army (NVA)

position on Hill 352,

approximately 17 mile west of Tam Ky in Quang Tin Province,

Republic of Vietnam.

 

The mission that day was

to seize control of

the strategic high ground

held by the NVA.

As McCleery’s platoon

advanced up the rugged slope,

they were suddenly hit

 by a withering hail of

fire from multiple enemy

bunkers.

The NVA had positioned

their machine guns and

rocket launchers to cover

the approach, and their

mortars rained down

from concealed positions.

Within moments,

several American soldiers

were hit, and the rest

took cover behind rocks

 and shallow dips

in the terrain.

The momentum of the assault

was lost, and the advance

stalled.

 

McCleery saw the situation

deteriorating rapidly.

Knowing that staying pinned

down would result in more

casualties, he made a quick

decision to take the fight

directly to the enemy.

Rising from his cover,

he grabbed his rifle,

motioned for his men

to lay down suppressive fire,

and began moving forward

alone.

As he crossed the first

20 meters of open ground,

bullets kicked up dirt around

his feet and whizzed past

his head. Rockets streaked

overhead, and mortar blasts

shook the ground.

 

Undeterred, McCleery kept

moving, zig-zagging to make

himself a harder target.

When he reached within

30 meters of the first bunker,

he fired his rifle from the hip, sending controlled bursts into

the enemy position

while simultaneously pulling

the pin from a grenade.

He lobbed the grenade with

precision, and seconds later

it detonated inside the bunker,

silencing the gunfire.

 

McCleery did not pause

to check the results.

Instead, he sprinted to

the next bunker while

the enemy, now aware of

his approach, redirectef

their fire toward him.

A mortar blast nearby

peppered his right side

with shrapnel, but McCleery

pushed on, ignoring the pain.

He reached the second bunker,

fired his rifle into the entrance,

and followed it with another

grenade. As the explosion

rocked the interior,

he charged forward, firing

into the bunker to ensure

it was clear.

 

At this point, McCleery

realized he had broken

through the enemy perimeter.

He climbed on top of

the captured bunker,

waving to his men and

shouting for them to follow.

His bold action inspired

the rest of the platoon

to move forward,

breaking free from their

pinned positions.

McCleery’s direct assault

had given them the opening

they needed.

 

However, the fight was

far from over.

As he moved along the line of

bunkers, clearing each one

with rifle fire and grenades,

a second explosion sent

shrapnel into his legs.

He stumbled but remained

on his feet, driven by sheer

determination.

He continued to fire

at enemy positions,

moving along the bunker line

and taking out every

strongpoint he encountered.

 

His relentless assault shattered

the NVA’s defensive line.

One by one, the remaining

enemy soldiers began to flee,

abandoning their fortified

positions. Seeing the enemy

retreat, McCleery called out

to his platoon, rallying them

to press the attack.

His men surged forward,

overtaking the bunkers

and driving the remaining

NVA off the hill.

 

By the time the fight ended,

Hill 352 was firmly in

American hands.

McCleery’s actions had

not only neutralized the key

enemy bunkers but had also

motivated his soldiers to turn

the tide of the battle.

Despite his wounds,

he refused to be evacuated

until he was sure the hill was

secured and his men were safe.

 

For his extraordinary bravery

 and leadership in the face of

overwhelming enemy fire,

Sergeant First Class

Finnis D. McCleery was

awarded the *Medal of Honor*.

The medal was presented

to him by President

Richard M. Nixon on March 2,

1971, in the East Ballroom

of the White House.

McCleery’s legacy of fearless

leadership and dedication

to his comrades remains

a powerful example of selfless

service.

He passed away on July 11,

2002, and is buried

at Belvedere Memorial Park

공격의 기세는 꺾였고, 진격은 정지되었습니다.

맥클리어리는 상황이 급격하게 악화되는 것을 목격했습니다.
고착 상태를 유지하면
더 많은 사상자가 발생할 것이라는 것을 알고 있던 그는

적과 직접 전투를 벌이기로 재빨리 결정했습니다.
엄폐물에서 일어나 그는 소총을 집어 들고 부대원들에게
제압 사격을 하라고 손짓한 후 혼자 전진하기 시작했습니다.

그가 첫 번째 20미터의 개활지를 가로지르자 총알들이 그의 발 주변 흙먼지를 일으키며
그의 머리 위를 스쳐 지나갔습니다.
로켓이 머리 위로 날아들었고 박격포탄이 땅을 뒤흔들었습니다.

소대원들에게 공격을 계속하라고 명령했습니다.

남아 있는 북베트남군을 언덕에서 몰아냈습니다.

전투가 끝날 무렵, 352고지는 미군의 수중에 확고히 들어갔습니다.

맥클리어리의 행동은 적의 주요 벙커를 무력화시켰을 뿐만 아니라
전황을 역전시키도록 장군들에게 동기를 부여했습니다.

부상을 입었음에도 불구하고 그는
고지가 확보되고 병사들이 안전하다는 확신이 들 때까지
후퇴를 거부했습니다.

압도적인 적의 포화 속에서도 보여준 그의 비범한 용맹과
지도력 덕분에 일등 상사 피니스 D. 맥클리어리는

*명예 훈장*을 수여받았습니다.

이 메달은 1971년 3월 2일 백악관 동쪽 볼룸에서
리처드 M. 닉슨 대통령이
그에게 수여했습니다.

맥클리어리의 두려움 없는  리더십과 헌신은
동료들에게 남아 있으며,

사심 없는 봉사의 강력한 본보기입니다.

그는 2002년 7월 11일에 세상을 떠났으며
텍사스주 샌앤젤로에 있는 벨베데어 기념 공원
묘지에 안장되었습니다.
