Colonel Charles W. Shea

On this day, 81 years ago,

on May 12, 1944,

Second Lieutenant

Charles W. Shea, 22,

of New York City, was serving

with Company F,

350th Infantry Regiment,

88th Infantry Division,

near Mount Damiano, Italy.

That day, Shea's company

 was advancing up a hill

as part of an offensive against

well-entrenched German forces when they suddenly came

under intense machine-gun fire

from three enemy positions.

The German gunners had

perfect elevation, and their fire

halted the company’s progress. Several men were hit, and the

rest of the company

was pinned down.

 

Shea assessed the situation

and realized that unless

the machine guns were

neutralized, his unit would

not be able to advance.

Without waiting for orders,

he decided to take action.

He moved forward alone,

crawling and ducking through

the sporadic gunfire. His every

move was calculated,

as the gunners were scanning

for any sign of movement.

 

Reaching the first

machine-gunest, Shea pulled

the pin on a hand grenade

and lobbed it toward the

position.

The explosion hit its mark,

and as the smoke cleared,

he moved in quickly, rifle

at the ready. He found four

stunned German soldiers,

 who dropped their weapons

and surrendered.

Shea disarmed them and

motioned for them to move

to the rear, making sure they

didn’t pose any further threat.

 

With the first position secured,

Shea did not hesitate.

He knew the other two

machine-gun nests were still

raining down fire on his

company. He carefully made

his way to the second nest,

crawling through the tall

grass and using every bit of

cover he could find.

As he approached, he could

hear the sharp cracks of

rifle fire mixed with the

rhythmic bursts from the

machine gun.

He moved in close, and then,

with precise timing, threw

another grenade.

The blast took the enemy

soldiers by surprise,

and two more Germans

surrendered without resistance.

 

While Shea was dealing with

the second nest, the third

machine gun opened fire

directly at him.

He barely had time to hit

the ground as bulletskicked up

dirt around him. Lying flat,

he tried to gauge the distance

and the number of enemy

soldiers in the nest.

Knowin that staying still would

eventually make him an easy

target, he made the decision

to move fast and aggressively.

 

Shea suddenly rose to his feet

and charged directly at the

machine-gun position,

his rifle aimed at the enemy.

The German gunners,

caught off guard by his bold

move, tried to swing the gun

 around. Shea fired his rifle

as he moved forward,

his shots accurate and lethal.

One by one, he took down

the three enemy soldiers

operating the gun.

 

With all three machine-gun

positions eliminated, the pathup the hill was clear.

 Shea signaled to his men,

and the company resumed its

advance. His fearless assault

on the fortified positions inspired his fellow soldiers and made

it possible for the company

to continue their mission.

 

For his extraordinary bravery

and leadership under fire,

Charles W. Shea was awarded

the *Medal of Honor*

on January 12, 1945.

After the war, he continued

to serve his country,

joining the New York

National Guard in 1949

and eventually retiring

as a Colonel in 1972.

He passed away on April 7,

1994, at the age of 72,

and was buried in Long Island

National Cemetery,

Farmingdale, New York.
