PFC. Henry Svehla    (US Army)



Remembering Army Private First Class Henry Svehla 

who gave his life for his comrades and his country. 

On May 2, 2011, he was posthumously awarded 

the United States Military's highest decoration 

— the Medal of Honor — 

for heroic actions and sacrifice of his own life during the Korean War.

Henry Svehla was born in 1932 in Newark, New Jersey.

 He joined the Army in 1951. 

By June 12, 1952, near Pyongony, Korea, Henry Svehla was a private first class 

serving as a rifleman with Company F, 32d Infantry Regiment, 

7th Infantry Division. 

On that day, 

while PFC Svehla and his platoon were patrolling a strategic hill 

when they came under intense enemy automatic weapons 

and small fire at the top of the hill.

 Svehla leapt to his feet and charged the enemy positions,

 firing his weapon and throwing grenades as he advanced. 

In the face of his courage and determination, he inflicted heavy casualties. 

When suddenly, 

fragments from a mortar round exploding nearby wounded Svehla seriously in the face. 

Despite his wounds, he refused medical treatment and continued to lead the attack. 

When an enemy grenade landed among a group of his comrades, 

without hesitation, he threw himself upon the grenade in order to protect those around him. 

Private First Class Svehla was instantly killed in the explosion.

 His remains have never been recovered.



He was posthumously awarded the *Medal of Honor* on May 2, 2011. 

His sisters accepted the medal on his behalf. 

He is memorialized at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, 

Honolulu, Hawaii, the National Korean War Veterans Memorial, 

Washington, DC 

and has a memorial headstone in Arlington National Cemetery, 

Arlington, Virginia.



We are forever thankful to PFC Henry Svehla for his selfless service and ultimate sacrifice made for his country.

일병 헨리 스벨라 (미 육군)

전우와 조국을 위해 목숨을 바친 육군 일등병 헨리 스벨라를 추모합니다. 

2011년 5월 2일, 그는 한국전쟁 당시 영웅적인 행동과 희생으로 

미군 최고 훈장인 명예 훈장을 사후에 수여받았습니다.

헨리 스벨라는 1932년 뉴저지주 뉴어크에서 태어나 1951년 육군에 입대했습니다. 

1952년 6월 12일, 평양 인근에서 헨리 스벨라는

 제7보병사단 제32보병연대 F중대 소총병으로 복무 중이던 일등병이었습니다. 

그날, 스벨라 일병과 그의 소대는 전략적 요충지를 순찰하던 중 

적의 기관총과 소규모 사격을 받았습니다. 

스벨라는 벌떡 일어나 적진을 향해 돌격하며 무기를 발사하고 수류탄을 던졌습니다. 

그의 용기와 결의에 반하여 그는 적에게 큰 피해를 입혔습니다. 

그런데 갑자기 근처에서 폭발한 박격포 파편이 스벨라의 얼굴에 중상을 입혔습니다.

그는 부상을 입었음에도 치료를 거부하고 공격을 계속 지휘했습니다.

적의 수류탄이 그의 동료들 사이에 떨어지자, 그는 망설임 없이 수류탄 위로 뛰어올라 주변 사람들을 보호했습니다.

일등병 스벨라는 폭발로 즉사했습니다.

그의 유해는 아직까지 발견되지 않았습니다.

그는 2011년 5월 2일 사후 *명예 훈장*을 수여받았습니다. 

그의 자매들이 그를 대신하여 훈장을 받았습니다. 

그는 하와이 호놀룰루에 있는 국립 태평양 기념묘지와 워싱턴 D.C.에 있는 

국립 한국전 참전 용사 기념관에 안장되어 있으며, 

버지니아주 알링턴에 있는 알링턴 국립묘지에도 묘비가 있습니다.

조국을 위해 헌신하고 희생하신 헨리 스벨라 일병께 영원히 감사드립니다.

 훌륭한 전사님, 편히 쉬십시오. 당신은 결코 잊히지 않을 것입니다!
