LTC. Harold Bauer (USMC)

 

On this day in 1942,

Lieutenant Colonel Harold Bauer went above and beyond the call of duty

while serving our nation during World War II,

for which he would later receive the *Medal of Honor*. 

 

During a critical period in the South Pacific, Bauer,

as Squadron Commander of Marine Fighting Squadron 212,

displayed extraordinary heroism.

Volunteering to defend Guadalcanal,

he fearlessly engaged numerically superior enemy forces in multiple air battles,

personally destroying one bomber and four fighters in separate engagements.

Notably, after leading a long over-water ferry flight,

he single-handedly attacked an enemy squadron threatening the U.S.S.

McFarland while low on fuel, brilliantly shooting down four more Japanese planes

before being forced down himself.

His indomitable fighting spirit, exceptional leadership,

and remarkable combat record were

vital to the successful operations in the South Pacific.

 

Preserving stories like Bauer’s is essential—not only to honor their sacrifice

but to inspire future generations with examples of valor, integrity, and service.

The Congressional Medal of Honor Society is committed

to ensuring these incredible acts of bravery are never forgotten

and continue to serve as a beacon of hope and resilience for our nation.

1942년 오늘, 

해럴드 바우어 중령은 제2차 세계 대전 중 조국을 위해 헌신하며 의무를 다했고, 

그 공로로 훗날 *명예 훈장*을 받았습니다.

남태평양의 중요한 시기에, 

바우어는 제212 해병 전투 비행대대 사령관으로서 비범한 영웅적 활약을 보여주었습니다.

과달카날 방어에 자원하여 여러 차례 공중전에서 수적으로 우세한 적군과 용감하게 교전하여

폭격기 1대와 전투기 4대를 직접 격추했습니다.

특히, 장거리 해상 페리 비행을 지휘한 후,

연료가 부족한 상황에서 U.S.S. 맥팔랜드를 위협하는 적 비행대를 단독으로 공격하여

일본군 전투기 4대를 격추하는 기염을 토한 후, 결국 추락했습니다.

그의 불굴의 투지, 탁월한 지도력,

그리고 뛰어난 전투 기록은 남태평양 작전의 성공에 결정적인 역할을 했습니다.

바우어와 같은 이야기를 보존하는 것은 그들의 희생을 기리는 것뿐만 아니라, 

용맹, 성실, 그리고 봉사의 모범을 통해 미래 세대에게 영감을 주기 위해 필수적입니다.
