Corporal Thomas Perkins Jr. (USMC)

                        

 

William Thomas Perkins Jr. (August 10, 1947 – October 12, 1967) was

a United States Marine who posthumously received the United States' highest military decoration for valor

— the *Medal of Honor* —

for his heroic action on October 12, 1967,

during the Vietnam War in which he smothered an exploding grenade with his body

to save the lives of three fellow Marines.

Perkins is the only combat photographer to have received the *Medal of Honor*.

 

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above

and beyond the call of duty while serving as a combat photographer attached to Company C, First Battalion,

First Marines, First Marine Division, in the Republic of Vietnam on 12 October 1967.

During Operation MEDINA, a major reconnaissance force southwest of Quang Tri,

Company C made heavy combat contact with a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army Force

estimated at two to three companies.

The focal point of the intense fighting was a helicopter landing zone

that also served as the command post of Company C.

In the course of a strong, hostile attack,

an enemy grenade landed in the immediate area occupied by Corporal Perkins

and three other Marines. Realizing the inherent danger,

he shouted the warning, "Incoming Grenade" to his fellow Marines,

and in a valiant act of heroism, hurled himself upon the grenade,

absorbing the impact of the explosion with his own body, t

hereby saving the lives of his comrades at the cost of his own.

Through his exceptional courage and inspiring valor in the face of certain death,

Corporal Perkins reflected great credit upon himself

and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

He gallantly gave his life for his country.

토마스 퍼킨스 주니어 상병 (해병대)



윌리엄 토마스 퍼킨스 주니어(1947년 8월 10일 ~ 1967년 10월 12일)는 

미 해병대원으로, 1967년 10월 12일 베트남 전쟁 당시

 폭발하는 수류탄을 자신의 몸으로 막아 동료 해병 3명의 목숨을 구한 

영웅적인 행동으로 미국 최고 군사 용맹 훈장인 *명예 훈장*을 사후 수여받았습니다.

 퍼킨스는 *명예 훈장*을 수여받은 유일한 종군 사진작가입니다.

인용:

1967년 10월 12일, 베트남 공화국에서 제1해병사단 제1해병연대 제1대대 C중대 소속 

전투 사진작가로 복무하며 임무 수행의 한계를 넘어 

용감하고 용감하게 임무를 수행한 공로를 인정받았습니다. 

꽝찌 남서쪽에서 진행된 주요 정찰 부대인 메디나 작전 중, 

C중대는 2~3개 중대로 추정되는 수적으로 우세한 북베트남군과

치열한 교전을 벌였습니다.

치열한 전투의 핵심은 C중대의 지휘소 역할을 하는 헬리콥터 착륙장이었습니다.

적의 강력한 공격이 진행되는 동안,

퍼킨스 상병과 다른 해병대원 세 명이 있던 바로 그 지역에 적의 수류탄이 떨어졌습니다.

내재된 위험을 깨달은 그는 동료 해병들에게 "수류탄 공격!"이라고 외치며 경고했습니다.

그리고 용감무쌍한 영웅심으로 수류탄 위로 몸을 던져 폭발의 충격을 온몸으로 흡수하고,

자신의 목숨을 걸고 동료들의 목숨을 구했습니다.

죽음의 문턱에서 보여준 비범한 용기와 감동적인 용맹은 퍼킨스 상병이

자신과 해병대에 큰 영광을 안겨주었고,

미 해군의 가장 높은 전통을 수호하는 데 큰 힘이 되었습니다.

그는 조국을 위해 용감하게 목숨을 바쳤습니다.
