On August 24, 1969, while serving as an assistant team leader,

Lance Corporal Anderson and his company were conducting a patrol.

Suddenly they came under a heavy volume of automatic-weapons

and machine-gun fire from a numerically superior and well-concealed enemy force. 

 

Although painfully wounded in both legs and knocked to the ground

during the initial moments of the fierce firefight,

Anderson assumed a prone position and continued

to deliver intense suppressive fire in an attempt to repulse the attackers. 

 

Moments later he was wounded a second time by an enemy soldier

who had approached to within eight feet of the team's position.

Undaunted, he continued to pour a relentless stream of fire at the assaulting unit,

even while a companion was treating his leg wounds.

Observing an enemy grenade land between himself

and the other marine, Anderson immediately rolled over

and covered the lethal weapon with his body, absorbing the full effects of the detonation. 

 

By his indomitable courage, inspiring initiative,

and selfless devotion to duty, L/Cpl. Anderson was instrumental in saving several Marines.

1969년 8월 24일, 부팀장으로 복무 중이던 앤더슨 상병과 그의 중대는 순찰 중이었습니다. 

갑자기 수적으로 우세하고 은폐력이 뛰어난 적군의 기관총과 기관총 사격에 직면했습니다.

치열한 총격전 초반에 양쪽 다리에 중상을 입고 땅에 쓰러졌지만, 

앤더슨은 엎드린 자세를 유지하며 공격자들을 격퇴하기 위해 

계속해서 집중적인 제압 사격을 가했습니다.

잠시 후, 그는 팀 진지에서 2.4미터(8피트) 이내로 접근한 적군에게 두 번째 부상을 입었습니다. 

그는 굴하지 않고 동료가 다리 부상을 치료하는 동안에도

 공격 부대를 향해 끊임없이 사격을 퍼부었습니다. 

적의 수류탄이 자신과 다른 해병 사이에 떨어지는 것을 본 앤더슨 상병은 

즉시 몸을 뒤집어 그 치명적인 무기를 온몸으로 감싸 폭발의 충격을 완전히 흡수했습니다.

앤더슨 상병은 불굴의 용기, 고무적인 결단력, 

그리고 의무에 대한 사심 없는 헌신으로 

여러 해병을 구하는 데 중요한 역할을 했습니다.
