After graduating from high school in 1945,

Larry Joel joined the Merchant Marine.

He enlisted in the Army a year later and went to jump school.

Joel spent most of his tour in postwar Italy. 
In 1965, Joel, then a 37-year-old specialist 5,

was assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade, and sent to Vietnam.   

On November 8, 1966 he accompanied an infantry company into a Viet Cong stronghold northwest of Saigon.

 Joel was unarmed and carrying a medical aid bag filled with bandages, 

syrettes of morphine, plasma and instruments.
 

After disembarking from helicopters, 

the lead squad was hit by withering fire from a well-hidden and much larger Viet Cong force. 

Nearly every man was killed or wounded. 

The remaining squads scrambled for cover to engage the enemy

 in what became a bitter 24-hour firefight.

Ignoring enemy fire, Joel rushed forward to reach the wounded and dead. 

As he darted from man to man, a machine-gun bullet struck him in the right leg. He paused long enough to rip open his pants, 

stuff a bandage into the wound and administer morphine to himself.

 

Hobbling across the battlefield,

 Joel patched up bullet wounds and gave mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. 

Finding a man who needed blood, 

Joel knelt in full view of the enemy to hold the bottle high enough 

to administer life-saving plasma amid a hail of bullets. 

Joel saw one soldier with a chest wound bubbling out his last ounces of blood. 

He pressed a plastic bandage bag over it hoping to congeal the blood—and silently praying for a miracle and the soldier survived.

 

A second bullet lodged in Joel’s right thigh, 

but he dragged himself over the battlefield to treat 13 more men before his supplies ran out. 

Joel sent word that he needed more. 

While waiting, he shouted words of encouragement to men who seemed to have no hope. 

A soldier who crept forward with the supplies noted Joel’s ripped trousers 

and bloody, bandaged legs. “You better head back to the rear and get treatment,” he said.

 

“I’ll be all right,” Joel responded. As another platoon charged forward to dislodge the entrenched enemy, 

Joel followed, knowing there would be many more wounds. 

Throughout the day and into the night, 

he limped and crawled under deadly fire to aid and comfort his comrades, 

even though they urged him to get down and head to the rear for treatment. Joel refused.

 

The next morning the battlefield was littered with more than 400 Viet Cong bodies. 

Nearly 50 Americans were dead. Many more were wounded. 

Joel moved about the battlefield to search for the wounded and recover the dead.

 He finally collapsed. According to Time magazine article: 

“Joel recalls looking at himself: 

hands encrusted with blood to the wrists, l

egs thick with edema and dirty bandages.

He lay under a tree and cried for the first time since he was a boy in Winston-Salem.”

 

An officer found Joel and ordered him to the rear for treatment. 

His comrades, stunned by his display of courage, 

compassion and determination, nominated him for the Medal of Honor.

President Lyndon B. Johnson presented him with the medal on March 9, 1967.

 In 1984, at age 55, Joel died of complications from diabetes.

 He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

헬리콥터에서 하선한 후, 선두 분대는 잘 숨어 있던 훨씬 규모가 큰 베트콩 부대의 맹렬한 공격을 받았습니다. 

거의 모든 사람이 전사하거나 부상을 입었습니다. 

남은 분대들은 엄폐물을 찾아 적과 교전했고,

적의 총격을 무시한 채 조엘은 부상자와 사망자에게 다가가기 위해 앞으로 달려갔습니다.

그는 잠시 멈춰 서서 바지를 찢고 

상처에 붕대를 감은 후 모르핀을 투여했습니다.

조엘은 전장을 절뚝거리며 총상을 치료하고 구강 대 구강 인공호흡을 실시했습니다. 

수혈이 필요한 병사를 발견한 조엘은 적의 시야가 완전히 확보된 곳에서 

무릎을 꿇고 총알 세례 속에서 생명을 구하는 혈장을 투여할 수 있도록 

병사를 높이 들었습니다. 

조엘은 가슴에 상처를 입은 한 병사가 마지막 남은 피를 뿜어내는 것을 보았습니다. 

그는 피가 굳기를 바라며 비닐 봉지를 그 위에 얹었고, 

기적이 일어나 병사가 살아남기를 마음속으로 기도했습니다.

두 번째 총알이 조엘의 오른쪽 허벅지에 박혔지만, 

그는 보급품이 떨어지기 전에 13명을 더 치료하기 위해 전장을 기어다녔습니다. 

조엘은 더 필요하다는 전갈을 보냈습니다. 

기다리는 동안, 그는 희망이 없어 보이는 병사들에게 큰 소리로 격려했습니다. 

보급품을 들고 살금살금 다가오던 한 병사가 조엘의 찢어진 바지와

피투성이에 붕대를 감은 다리를 발견했습니다.

"후방으로 돌아가 치료를 받는 게 낫겠군."

그가 말했습니다.

"괜찮을 거야." 조엘이 대답했습니다. 

다른 소대가 참호를 파고든 적을 몰아내기 위해 돌격하자,

 조엘은 더 많은 부상자가 생길 것을 알면서도 뒤따랐습니다. 

낮과 밤 내내, 그는 치명적인 총격을 받으며 절뚝거리며

기어가며 동료들을 돕고 위로했습니다.

동료들은 그에게 엎드려 후방으로 가서 치료를 받으라고 재촉했지만,

조엘은 거절했습니다.

다음 날 아침, 전장에는 400구가 넘는 베트콩 시신이 널려 있었습니다. 

거의 50명의 미군이 전사했고, 그보다 더 많은 사람들이 부상을 입었습니다. 

조엘은 부상자를 수색하고 전사자를 수습하기 위해 전장을 누볐습니다. 

그는 결국 쓰러졌습니다. 

타임지 기사에 따르면, "조엘은 자신의 모습을 떠올렸습니다. 

손목에는 피가 맺힌 손, 부종으로 두꺼워진 다리, 그리고 더러운 붕대. 

그는 윈스턴-세일럼에서 어린 시절 이후 처음으로 나무 아래 누워 울었습니다."

한 장교가 조엘을 발견하고 치료를 위해 후방으로 이동하도록 명령했습니다. 

그의 용기, 연민, 그리고 결단력에 감명받은 전우들은

그를 명예 훈장 후보로 추천했습니다.

린든 B. 존슨 대통령은 1967년 3월 9일 그에게 훈장을 수여했습니다. 

조엘은 1984년 55세의 나이로 당뇨병 합병증으로 사망했습니다.

 그는 알링턴 국립묘지에 안장되었습니다.
