Forrest "Woody" Volser

It was only the 4th

mission for 20-year-old

Technical Sergeant

Forrest "Woody" Vosler,

a radio operator with

the 358th Bombardment

Squadron.

On a B-17 mission over

Bremen, Germany,

the sky exploded with

flak and enemy fighters.

 

A 20mm cannon shell

ripped through the radio

compartment,

shattering his legs.

Bleeding heavily,

Vosler didn’t waver.

When another shell

wounded the tail gunner,

he dragged himself to

the guns and kept

fighting.

 

Then, a third hit blinded

him, shrapnel striking

his eyes.

Fading in and out of

consciousness,

Vosler refused aid,

firing until ordered to

bail out.

Unable to see, he still

repaired the radio,

sending a distress signal

before the crew ditched.

 

“If this is the way it’s

going to be,

at least I’m going to die

doing my job,” he later

recalled.

 

Miraculously, Vosler

survived the ditching

and was rescued,

enduring months of

recovery from his severe

injuries.

For his unbreakable

courage, Forrest Vosler

became only the second

enlisted airman

to receive

the *Medal of Honor*.

독일 브레멘 상공에서

 B-17이 임무를 수행하던 중, 

하늘은 대공포와 

적 전투기의 폭격으로 

가득 찼습니다.

20mm 기관포탄이 

무전기실을 꿰뚫고 그의 

다리를 산산조각 냈습니다. 

심한 피를 흘리면서도 

보슬러는 흔들리지

 않았습니다. 

또 다른 포탄이 꼬리 

사수에게 부상을 입히자, 

그는 몸을 질질 끌고 포대로

 달려가 계속 싸웠습니다.

그런데 세 번째 포탄에 맞아

 시력을 잃었고, 파편이

 그의 눈을 강타했습니다.

 의식을 잃었다 사라졌다를

 반복하며 보슬러는 도움을

 거부하고 탈출 명령이 

내려질 때까지 사격했습니다. 

앞을 볼 수 없게 된 그는 

무전기를 수리하고, 

승무원들이 탈출하기 전에

 조난 신호를 보냈습니다.

"이런 식으로 된다면, 

적어도 제 임무를 수행하다

 죽는 게 낫겠죠."라고 

그는 나중에 회상했습니다.

기적적으로 보슬러는 

불시착에서 살아남아 

구조되었고, 

심각한 부상에서 수개월

동안 회복하는 데

성공했습니다.

꺾이지 않는 용기로

포레스트 보슬러는

공군 사병으로는

두 번째로 *명예 훈장*을

받았습니다.
