    On this day, 54 years ago, on

             June 4 and 5, 1971, 

Staff Sergeant Jon R. 

Cavaiani, age 27, 

led a security platoon

at a remote radio relay

site known as Hickory Hill in Quang Tri Province,

South Vietnam.
The site was deep in

 enemy territory.

 Early morning on June 4, 

a large North Vietnamese

 force attacked with 

mortars,

 rocket-propelled 

grenades, automatic

 weapons, and small

 arms fire.

 The position came 

under heavy fire from 

multiple directions. 

Cavaiani moved along

 the perimeter under 

direct fire, issuing orders, 

checking positions, and 

personally firing back 

using whatever 

weapons were available.

 He coordinated the 

defense across the

 hilltop while enemy fire

 pounded the site.

As the attack intensified, 

higher command 

ordered an evacuation.

 Cavaiani stayed behind

 to cover the withdrawal.

 He coordinated the

 landing of three 

helicopters under fire. 

He guided wounded and

 able men into the 

extraction zone

 and ensured they 

boarded the aircraft. 

The enemy fire became

 too heavy. 

Further evacuation was

 not possible. 

The helicopters

 pulled out. 

Cavaiani stayed on the

 hill with the remaining

 men.
That night, Cavaiani

 organized the remaining 

troops. 

He repositioned men,

 strengthened weak spots, 

and prepared for another attack. Visibility was poor

the next morning.

Heavy ground fog

rolled in.

On June 5, the enemy

launched a second

assault.

They attacked in

organized waves.

The front line fired small

arms and RPGs.

The second wave threw

grenades.

Cavaiani moved through

the trenches shouting

orders and returning fire.
The perimeter was

 collapsing. 

Cavaiani ordered his men

 to break out and escape. 

He stayed behind

 to cover them. 

He picked up an M60

 machine gun and moved 

into open ground.

 He stood and fired

 directly into the 

advancing enemy at 

close range.

 He was hit multiple

 times but kept firing. 

His stand delayed the 

enemy long enough 

for most of the 

remaining soldiers to

 escape the kill zone.
Cavaiani was thought to 

be dead.

 He was captured by the 

North Vietnamese and 

taken as a prisoner of war.

 He remained in captivity

for almost two years. 

He was released during 

Operation Homecoming

 on March 27, 1973.

For his actions on June 4

 and 5, 1971, 

Staff Sergeant Jon R. 

Cavaiani was awarded

 the *Medal of Honor*.

철수는 불가능했습니다.

 헬리콥터가 철수했습니다. 

카바이아니는 남은 

병사들과 함께 언덕에 

남았습니다.
그날 밤, 카바이아니는 

남은 병력을 조직했습니다. 

그는 병력을 재배치하고, 

약점을 보강하고, 또 다른 

공격에 대비했습니다. 

다음 날 아침 시야가 좋지

 않았습니다. 

짙은 안개가 짙게 끼었습니다.

 6월 5일, 적군이 두 번째 

공격을 개시했습니다. 

그들은 조직적인 공세로 

공격했습니다. 

최전선에서는 소총과

 RPG를 발사했습니다. 

두 번째 공세에서는 

수류탄을 투척했습니다.

 카바이아니는 참호를 뚫고 

나가며 명령을 외치고 

응사했습니다.
경계선이 무너지고 

있었습니다. 

카바이아니는 부하들에게 

돌파하여 탈출하라고 

명령했습니다.

 그는 뒤에 남아 그들을 

엄호했습니다. 

그는 M60 기관총을 들고 

개활지로 이동했습니다. 

그는 일어서서 진격해 오는

 적군을 근거리에서 

직접 사격했습니다.

그는 1973년 3월 27일 

귀향 작전(Operation 

Homecoming) 중에 

석방되었습니다.
존 R. 카바이아니 하사는

1971년 6월 4일과 5일의

공로로 *명예 훈장*을
