SSGT. Walter D. Ehlers

On this day, 81 years ago, on June 9, 1944,

Staff Sergeant

Walter D. Ehlers, age 23,

fought with Company L,

3rd Battalion,

18th Infantry Regiment,

1st Infantry Division,

near Goville,France.

 

His squad was ordered

to lead the assault for

his platoon against

dug-in German forces.

Ehlers moved out ahead

of his men.

As he advanced, he

spotted an enemy patrol

of four soldiers.

He opened fire and killed all four. Without pausing, hecontinued forward

through machine-gun fire.

 

Ehlers crawled toward a

German machine-gun

nest. He lobbed a grenade into the position and then finished off the crew with

 his rifle. He signaled his

squad to advance and

led them through enemy

crossfire. They were

targeted by two German

mortar teams. Ehlers

located the positions

and moved toward them

under fire.

He took out both teams

and killed at least three

enemy soldiers with rifle

fire at close range.

He continued leading

the assault and found

another enemy

machine-gun crew.

He moved into range and destroyed the position

by himself.

The next day, June 10,

the company was

attacked again.

The enemy pinned down

the platoon with fire

from multiple directions.

The platoon was ordered

to withdraw.

Ehlers kept his squad

in position to cover

the retreat.

He exposed himself to

draw fire so the others

could fall back.

During this action,

Ehlers was hit by a

mortar fragment.

He kept moving.

One of his men was

 wounded and left behind.

Ehlers carried the man

to safety across

open ground.

 After reaching cover, he

realized the man’s

weapon had been left

behind.

Ehlers went back under

fire to retrieve it.

He refused evacuation

for his wounds and

stayed in the fight.

He kept leading his

squad through the end

of the engagement.

For his actions on June 9

and 10, 1944,

Staff Sergeant

Walter D. Ehlers was

awarded

the *Medal of Honor*.
