Europe and Africa are closer than many people

imagine.

Only 14 kilometers

(8.7 miles)

separate the two

continents, a distance

so short that, on a clear

day, it is possible to see

one from the other.

 

This point is located in

the Strait of Gibraltar,

between Spain and

Morocco.

It is there that

the Mediterranean Sea

meets the Atlantic Ocean,

forming one of the

busiest and most

important shipping routes in the world.

 

Over the years, proposals have been made to build

a tunnel or a bridge that

would connect .

the two sides.

The idea of ​​joining two

continents by land is

fascinating,

but to this day it has

never come to fruition.

 

And there is something

even more impressive.

Some people have

already faced the

 challenge of swimming

across this strait.

Even with the short

distance, the sea

currents are strong,

the ship traffic is constant and the crossing requires

a lot of physical fitness,

courage and special

authorizations.

 

It is surprising to think

that two worlds with so

many differences

are separated by so little.

A natural border that

arouses curiosity,

admiration and a desire

to explore.
