On this day, 81 years ago, on June 8, 1944,

Technical Sergeant

Frank D. Peregory, age 28,

fought with Company K,

3rd Battalion,

116th Infantry Regiment,

29th Infantry Division,

near Grandcamp-Maisy,

France, two days afte landing in Normandy.

 

His battalion’s advance

was stopped.

German machine gunners were dug into fortified

trench lines on high

ground.

The enemy positioncovered the road and

surrounding fields.

The Americans were

pinned down.

Artillery and tank fire

had failed to knock out

the strongpoint.

Every attempt to move

forward was met with

deadly fire.

 

Peregory took action.

Alone, under direct fire,

he worked his way up

the slope.

He crawled through hedgerows and ditches,

moving toward the

trench line.

When he reached the

crest, he entered the

trench from the flank.

Inside the trench, he

confronted a group of

enemy riflemen.

He opened fire with his

weapon,

killing eight soldiers and

forcing three others to

surrender.

 

He did not stop.

He moved down the

trench, clearing it section by section.

He continued throwing

grenades and firing into

dugouts.

At each point of contact,

German soldiers

surrendered.

By the time he reached

the machine gun crews,

the defenders gave up.

He disarmed them and

ordered them out.

 

In total, Peregory killed

multiple enemy troops

and captured over thirty

others by himself.

His action brokthe

German hold on the ridge.

His company moved in and took the ground.

The advance resumed.

 

Six days later, on June 14, 1944,

during continued fighting near Couvains, France,

Technical Sergeant Frank D. Peregory was killed in

action.

 

For his actions on June 8, 1944,

he was posthumously

awarded

the *Medal of Honor*.
