             Butts
        (US Army)



        On this day, 81 years ago, 

       on June 14, 1944, Second

        Lieutenant John E. Butts, 

             age 21, serving with 

       Company E, 2nd Battalion,

          60th Infantry Regiment, 

             9th Infantry Division, 

began a series of actions

 near Orglandes and

 Flottemanville-Hague, 

Normandy, France,

 that would lead to the 

posthumous award of

 the * Medal of Honor *.
On June 14, during an

 attack near Orglandes, 

Butts led his platoon 

through open terrain 

toward a series of entrenched German positions.

 As the unit advanced, 

they encountered heavy

machine gun fire.

Butts was hit by enemy

fire and wounded.

Despite the wound, he

refused medical

evacuation

and continued to lead

the platoon,

reorganizing the assault

under fire and ensuring

that his men maintained

pressure on the enemy

position.
Two days later, on June

 16, during the attack toestablish a bridgehead 

across the Douve River,

 Butts was wounded a 

second time. 

The platoon was

 pushing across a heavily

 defended area under 

artillery, mortar, and 

direct small arms fire. 

Again, Butts declined 

medical aid. 

He stayed with his 

platoon, continuing to 

lead the attack 

and direct movement.

His actions helped 

maintain momentum 

during a critical stage of 

the operation.
On June 23, near 

Flottemanville-Hague, 

Butts was tasked with

 leading an assault on a 

heavily fortified German 

hill position.

 The defenses included 

machine-gun nests, 

antitank weapons, 

pillboxes, and supporting

 tanks.

 The Germans also

 maintained acontinuous 

barrage of mortar

 and artillery fire across

 the approach route.
At the beginning of the

 attack, Butts was

 seriously wounded 

by machine-gun fire. 

The wound was severe,

 but he refused to stop.

 He ordered one squad

 to move around the

 enemy’s flank to set 

up a supporting position. 

Meanwhile, he moved

 directly up the center of 

the approach route alone, 

deliberately drawing the

 enemy's attention and

 fire away from his men.
He advanced under 

sustained fire, 

crawling forward

 through open terrain. 

He was hit again but 

continued to move.

 He reached a position 

approximately ten yards 

from the enemy’s front

 line

 before being killed by

 direct fire.
Butts’ final action

 allowed the flanking

 squad to close in 

and destroy the enemy

position.

His decision to continue

the frontal assault alone

drew fire

that would have otherwise hit the rest of the platoon.

His leadership throughout the ten days of continuous fighting

and three separate wounds was consistent and

deliberate.

At no point did he accept

evacuation or allow others to assume his role.
For his actions on June 

14, June 16, and June 

23, 1944, 

Second Lieutenan 

John E. Butts was 

posthumously awarded

 the * Medal of Honor *. 

He was first buried at 

the U.S. Military 

Cemetery at 

Sainte-Mère-Église in 

Normandy.

 In 1948, his remains

 were returned to 

the United States 

and reburied at

St. Mary’s Cemetery in 

Medina, New York. 

He was 21 years old.
