SO YOU WANT TO BE A WRITER

if it doesn’t come bursting out of you
in spite of everything,
don’t do it.
unless it comes unasked out of your
heart and your mind and your mouthand your gut,
don’t do it.
if you have to sit for hours
staring at your computer screen
or hunched over your typewriter
searching for words,
don’t do it.
if you’re doing it for money or fame,
don’t do it.
if you’re doing it because you want women in your bed,
don’t do it.
if you have to sit there and rewrite it again and again,
don’t do it.
if it’s hard work just thinking about doing it,
don’t do it.
if you’re trying to write like somebody else,
forget about it.

if you have to wait for it to roar out of  you,
then wait patiently.
if it never does roar out of you, do something else.

if you first have to read it to your wife
or your girlfriend or your boyfriend
or your parents or to anybody at all,
you’re not ready.

don’t be like so many writers,
don’t be like so many thousands of people

who call themselves writers,
don’t be dull and boring and pretentious,

don’t be consumed with self-love.
the libraries of the world

have yawned themselves to sleep over your kind.
don’t add to that.
don’t do it.
unless it comes out of your soul like a rocket,
unless being still would drive you to madness or
suicide or murder,
don’t do it.
unless the sun inside you is burning your gut,
don’t do it.

when it is truly time, and if you have been chosen,
it will do it by itself and it will keep on doing it
until you die or it dies in you.

there is no other way.

and there never was.

모든 것이 준비되어 있어도

당신 안에서 터져 나오는 것이 없는 한

작가가 되지 마라..

당신의 가슴과 당신의 영혼과 당신의 입술에서, 직감이

당신이 요청없이  나오지 않는 한 

작가가 되지 마라

적당한 단어를 찾기 위해 몇시간이나 컴퓨터 화면을 바라보거나

타자기 앞에 웅크리고 앉아 있다면

작가가 되지 마라

돈을 바라거나 명성을 위해서라면

작가가 되지 마라

침대에 여자를 끌어들이기 위해 쓰고 있다면

작가가 되지 마라

자리에 앉아서 먼저 쓴 걸 고치고 또 고치고 있다면

작가가 되지 마라

글쓰기에 대해 계속 생각하면서 열심히 글을 쓰고 있다면

작가가 되지 마라

다른 누군가처럼 쓰기 위해 애쓰는 중이라면

작가가 될 생각을 잊어라

당신 안에서 으르렁 거리는 소리를 기다려야 한다면

참을성 있게 그것이 오기를 기다려라.

그리고 결코 그 으르렁거리는 소리를  들을 수 없다면 다른 일을 찾으라

아내한테, 여자친구한테, 혹은 남자친구,

부모 한 테라거나 또 다른 누구에게 먼저 읽혀야 한다면 

당신은 아직 준비가 되지 않았다

수많은 작가들처럼 되지 마라,

스스로를 작가라 부르는 많은 이들처럼 되지 마라

따분하고고 지루하고 가식적인 작가가 되지 마라

자기 사랑에 시간을 보내는 작가가 되지 마라

세상의 도서관은 그런 작가들 때문에 하품이나 해 대면서 밤을 보내고 있다

거기에 당신의 이름을 더하지 마라.

작가가 되지 마라

당신 영혼이 로켓처럼 터져 날아가지 않는다면,

당신이 미칠 것 같거나 자살하고 싶거나, 살인을 꿈꾸지 않는다면 

작가가 되지 마라.

당신 안에 있는  태양이 당신 내부에서 타오르지 않는다면 

작가가 되지 마라

진정으로 때가 되면 그리고 당신이 선택받았다면,

저절로 당신은 작가가 될 것이고,

당신이 국거나 당신 안에서 작가가 죽을 때까지

계속해서 글을 쓰게 될 것이다.

다른 길은 없다 절대로 없다
